This document fixes what a transmission instrument is, what a setting is, how settings are named, and how an assessment of a reader becomes a configuration. The instruments are written against it, the roster validates it, and the essay narrates it. Nothing here composes prose. It says what the things that compose prose are.

A document's delivery admits many adjustments, and a writer who sets them one at a time is doing avoidable work. The adjustments are not independent. A reader who cannot carry a reorientation midway is, nearly always, the same reader who cannot carry a compressed sentence, and both facts are one fact about depletion wearing two costumes. Whatever produces the need for a settled viewpoint tends to produce the need for distributed contrast at the same time, from the same source, in the same proportion.
That source is the reader, described precisely enough to act on. This document calls the description a posture: the stable combination of circumstances a particular reader brings to a document. A posture has six components. A configuration has sixteen settings. The six determine all but three of the sixteen, two of those within floors that a fourth declaration sets, which is why the ontology has two layers rather than one, and why the layer that matters is the smaller one.
The writer assesses a posture. The transform yields a configuration. The instruments compose or revise prose to occupy it.
A setting names a region of the solution space the prose should occupy. It does not name a limit the prose must not exceed.
The distinction determines what the instruments can do. A constraint is satisfied by avoidance and yields nothing under conflict; its failure is silent, since a construction that was wanted and refused leaves no trace of having been either. A characterization is satisfied by occupation and yields usable information under conflict, because it declares not only where the prose belongs but how far it may wander and which way to move when something has to give.
Every scalar setting therefore resolves to three values.
Instruments that work by caps, prohibitions, and percentage ceilings belong to a different family. They do not compose with this one, and running both leaves two authorities governing one quality with no rule between them.
Direction runs uniformly: 0.0 is the compact, mobile, forceful pole; 1.0 is the steady, gradual, low-pressure pole. Equivalently, and more usefully: 0.0 is heavy on the reader and 1.0 is light.
Every scalar setting is named for the quality that is maximal at 1.0. A configuration string then reads without consultation, which is the entire purpose of the rule. Categorical settings are listed last within each instrument, so that a block scans as numbers and then modes rather than as an alternation of the two.
The scalar set, read at its high pole, forms one line:
At 1.0 the prose is settled, linked, flat, bare, spread, sparse, plain, ground, steady, and single; every claim stands iuxta its moment, the composition runs sequent with the chronology, and the ask arrives by invite rather than by command.
At the low pole: mobile, cut, layered, defended, compressed, dense, extended, ungrounded, dramatic, unmanaged, present-anchored, free, commanding.
iuxta is the one key that is not a predicate adjective, and the rule accommodates it rather than bending to it: the Latin does its native work as a preposition, so the high-pole line reads as a sentence instead of a list, and the key teaches its own sense in the reading.
Four naming choices were close enough to record, each illustrating the rule doing work.
Rate names were rejected for concept arrival. A name describing a rate leaves the reader of a configuration string to work out which side of the ratio the number sits on, and a setting whose direction requires arithmetic has failed before it is applied. sparse states the quality directly: at 1.0 concepts are sparse, at 0.2 they are not.
authority was rejected for the force of the ask. It is the natural word for the relation and it is maximal at the wrong end, since the writer holds most authority where the setting sits lowest. invite names the same relation from the side that grows toward 1.0.
chaos was rejected for recurrence. It would have been the one setting in the family running backward against every other, and a single reversed direction costs more in misreadings than an imperfect name costs in elegance. single runs with the rest: at 1.0 exactly one phrase recurs.
dated was rejected for epoch attachment. It satisfies the rule and pays its cost repeatedly rather than once. The homonym inverts the valence, since "dated" as obsolete is the opposite of what the high pole rewards, and the word over-narrows to calendar marking when a document can sit at the high pole with no date anywhere in it---at the time of the decision, the advisory had not been published is fully compliant. iuxta names the relation the setting actually governs: a claim reported according to a state, as Jerome's Psalter iuxta Hebraeos names which textual witness a reading is taken from. Two nearer misses were also declined. retro names the stance that produces the very error the setting prevents, and a key taken from a failure mode misdirects every repair its diagnosis will prescribe. coeval names sameness of age, a property holding between two things, where the setting names a relation between a claim and the moment it answers to. dated survives as the plain-language gloss for a reader meeting the key for the first time.
Six components, each independently assessable, together sufficient to determine a configuration. Five are scalars on the same 0.0 to 1.0 range as the settings; triage alone is categorical, naming a reading path rather than a quantity of reading, since a reader who scans headings throughout and a reader who reads the opening and decides consume different parts of a document rather than different amounts of it. Each is stated as something the reader has or does, never as something the reader needs. Keeping the assessment observational keeps the inference in the transform, where it can be inspected and corrected.
fluency --- vocabulary and conceptual holdings in this specific domain. What the reader already carries and need not be given.
stamina --- assembly rate available now. Fatigue, time pressure, position in the working day. Distinct from fluency and frequently opposed to it, since a specialist at the end of a hard week holds everything and can assemble nothing.
appetite --- desire for compression, as against capacity for it. A reader may absorb a patiently distributed explanation and resent it, the distribution registering as time spent without consent. Appetite is the component most often assumed rather than assessed, and the assumption usually runs low.
scrutiny --- the degree to which the reader evaluates the writer alongside the content, from settled, through guarded, to adversarial by role. Scrutiny changes how ordinary devices are received: a compressed formulation that reads to a settled reader as efficient reads to a scrutinizing one as a claim to authority not yet granted, and it does so independently of how easily it parses.
oblige --- how far the reader is obliged to read at all. At the high end, attention secured by role or relationship. At the low end, a reader present by choice, who departs the moment the prose asks for effort, quietly and without complaint, no obligation having been incurred. Two readers may match on every other component and want opposite affective weather, because one owes the writer the reading and the other owes nothing.
triage --- what the reader does with the document physically: reads it through, scans the structure and descends selectively, reads the opening and decides, or meets one sentence in passing. Triage varies independently of the others, since scanning is a habit of workload that expert and settled readers practice as readily as anyone.
The composite of fluency, stamina, and appetite is a reader's headroom: how much difficulty the prose can ask for before it starts to distort. One number where a quick assessment suffices, three where they disagree. Scrutiny, triage, and obligation stay outside it deliberately, being stance, behavior, and terms rather than capacity, and driving settings that capacity does not reach. Three components compose the headroom; three condition how it may be spent.
One inversion, stated once and never again. Headroom runs opposite to the settings: the more a reader can carry, the more the document may ask, and asking is the heavy pole. High headroom produces low numbers. The transform carries this, so the writer never performs it.
Three instruments, each owning the settings that govern one kind of cost the reader pays.

Scalars precede categoricals within each group. The document group is the exception, its trailing span being an integer target word count rather than a mode, given only where a length is already known.

spread --- how far a contrast is distributed. At 1.0 every contrast develops across a span of predications. At 0.0 the entire force of a claim lands inside one clause. Precision is identical at both ends; only its distribution differs.
sparse --- how thinly new load-bearing concepts arrive. At 1.0 one per section, with intervening material developing and discharging it. At 0.0 concepts arrive in parallel and are disambiguated by their relations.
plain --- lexical register. At 1.0 plain equivalents are substituted wherever they exist at the same register, and any term retained is glossed at first use. At 0.0 extended vocabulary is preferred and travels unglossed.
ground --- whether a compressed form has its foundation laid before the document leans on it. What counts as a compressed form is decided by the reader rather than by the form: a coined phrase, a named concept, an acronym, or an inherited term of art all belong here whenever this reader does not hold them. At 1.0 no compressed form is invoked before its foundation is laid, and recurrence intervals are calibrated to retention. At 0.0 coinage travels on first mention, which serves a reader holding the definitions already and quietly degrades everything downstream for one who does not.
This setting and plain are two answers to one problem. Where the reader lacks a term, plain substitutes it away and ground retains and teaches it. Where no same-register equivalent exists, substitution would cost the distinction and ground carries the burden alone, which makes low plain with high ground the configuration for vital detail delivered to a reader who does not yet hold the vocabulary.
cadence (mode) --- staccato, short declaratives dominant; misura, medium sentences punctuated by short ones; legato, long-breath sentences resolving fully in turn. Cadence supplies the span across which distribution spreads, which is why maximum spread in a clipped register cannot be satisfied.
steady --- how far affective weather moves across the document. At 1.0 gravity is carried entirely by content and placement, never by tonal signaling, and a document calm about serious matters signals command of the situation. At 0.0 valence is unrestricted, which is correct for genuine emergency and for attention that must be recruited before it can be spent.
invite --- the force with which the ask arrives. At 1.0 invitation: maximum reader autonomy, ideas offered to mature as the reader's own. Near 0.7, structured alternatives whose ordering does the persuading. At 0.5, the ask carried by evidence with the reader's authority to decide preserved. Near 0.3, obligation stated as fact about the situation rather than as command at the reader --- depersonalized, firm without confrontation, and frequently the executive optimum. At 0.0, mandate.
single --- how nearly the document's recurring vocabulary reduces to one phrase. Recurrence is a document's highlighting system: whatever recurs, the reader retains, and the mechanism operates on whatever happens to recur. At 1.0 only the vocabulary of the message recurs and competing repetition is varied away, leaving one memorable phrase, and it is the one that was chosen. At 0.0 natural repetition stands, and the reader may leave carrying a subsidiary phrase that fit well and got used four times.
place (mode) --- early, stated in the opening and developed after; defer, arriving once the development has made it self-evident; coda, deferred plus enactment, the message restating the document's development in the act of asking; frame, early with a coda return, spending double recurrence deliberately where a single placement would decay across the span; sentence, the whole document being the message, with nothing preceding it and nothing following.
settled --- how long one vantage persists before shifting. At 1.0 one vantage per section, moving only at announced boundaries. At 0.0 the vantage may shift per clause, which is right where a document's structure is rotation among items rather than development of one.
linked --- how far each sentence opens on ground the previous sentence prepared. At 1.0 every sentence and every section inherits its predecessor's closing material. At 0.0 sentences open cold.
flat --- perspectival layers per sentence. At 1.0 one layer, framing collapsed into direct predication. At 0.0 three or more strata where precision warrants: a stance about a claim about a source.
bare --- how much unrequested justification the prose carries. At 1.0 claims stand without defense, ranking, or apology. At 0.0 every claim anticipates challenge and arrives pre-defended, which repays its cost only where challenge is genuinely coming.
iuxta --- how far each claim arrives carrying the knowledge state it belonged to. At 1.0 every claim stands according to its own moment, and a moment that cannot be established is declared unestablished rather than supplied. At 0.0 every claim states what is now known and the moment it became known is not carried, which is lightest on the reader and correct wherever nothing is being judged.
sequent --- how closely composition sequence tracks chronology. At 1.0 composition runs in occurrence order and every departure is announced. At 0.0 order is the argument's to choose and the reader re-times continuously, which is the latitude within which sequence alone can change what true facts appear to mean.
attribute (mode) --- agent, claims anchored to persons, for documents where responsibility is the message; artifact, anchored to documents and presentations, the inert container requiring no interest-modeling; impersonal, anchored to conditions, suited to settled fact and read as evasive wherever accountability is expected.
iuxta and sequent are stated above with the other vantage settings because that is where they live. What they govern needs more room than a setting entry allows, because the cost they position is unfamiliar and the pair is easy to collapse into one.
Three orders run through any document that reports events, and only one of them belongs to the writer.
Chronology is the order in which things happened. It is usually not given. Sometimes it can be established from record, sometimes imputed with stated confidence, and often neither---in which case the honest report is that the order is unknown.
Knowledge sequence is the order in which things became known, and it diverges from chronology as a matter of course rather than as an anomaly. A flaw introduced in March, exploited in June, and discovered in August has one chronology and a different knowledge sequence, and any judgment of conduct in July turns entirely on the second.
Composition sequence is the order the document delivers. It is the only one of the three the writer controls outright, which is what makes it the instrument through which the other two are honored or overwritten.
sequent aligns composition to chronology. iuxta aligns composition to knowledge sequence. The two vary independently, which is why they are two settings rather than one: a bare incident timeline runs in perfect occurrence order while attaching no knowledge state to anything, and a finding grouped by control family may date every observation while following no order at all.
Whether sequence is load-bearing is a fact about the document's office rather than about the reader's condition, so no posture assessment supplies it.
office (declared) --- construct, where the facts are inventory for what to build next, the question being what is now true and what follows from it; judicial, where the facts are evidence about decisions already taken, the question being not what is reasonable altogether but what was reasonable at each point in time.
Default construct. The default is safe in one direction only: a constructive document delivered judicially is merely costly, while a judicial document delivered constructively is wrong.
This is the only pair whose settings can be satisfied by an admission. Every other setting is satisfied by doing something to the prose. These two, at their high poles, are satisfied by declaring a gap the writer cannot close.
At high iuxta, a claim whose epoch cannot be established is compliant when the document says so, and non-compliant when the document supplies a plausible one. At high sequent, an order that cannot be established is reported as unestablished rather than imposed. The high pole obliges the writer to establish chronology or to declare it unestablished; it does not license imputation, and an imputed order presented as fact is the costliest error the pair can produce, because it arrives wearing the appearance of rigor.
This is the property that makes the pair unfamiliar and worth the extra paragraphs. A writer trained on the other fourteen settings reads a high pole as an instruction to add, and will supply the missing epoch from inference. Here the instrument asks the opposite.
Yield runs high across every setting because asking too much of a reader fails silently while asking too little fails visibly and recoverably. The judicial floors are exempt. Below them the document does not become costly; it becomes false, and no reader's comfort is worth that trade.
This makes office the second member of a class whose first member is steady. Both override in the same direction, against the reader's comfort, and for the same reason. steady was never an exception; it was the first instance of a kind, and naming the kind is what the second instance buys.
Neither is measured, and both are recorded here as the framework's live tuning surface rather than buried in the transform.
The gap, 0.35. Where sequent runs more than this above iuxta, the transform raises iuxta to close the distance. The excluded region is the bare chronology---perfect order carrying no epoch---and it is excluded structurally, on the same principle that forbids full distribution in a clipped register. A narrower gap couples the pair more tightly and engages more often; a wider one makes the rule a guard that rarely fires.
The discount, 0.20. sequent takes the stamina base less this amount, holding it below the other capacity-governed settings. Re-timing cost is real but smaller than reorientation cost, and topical order supplies its own economy, so a constructive document should not drift chronological merely because its reader is depleted.
Precision relocated is not precision removed. Content held fixed, lowered compression moves that content into more tokens rather than discarding any of it.
Content, compression, and length form a triple of which any two may be chosen. The third follows.
A document required to be short, plain, and complete is not badly configured but over-specified, and the framework's obligation is to say so rather than to attempt it. One global declaration names which term yields.
priority --- content lets length float and is correct whenever vital detail is the binding constraint; extent holds the span and requires content to be cut, which returns an editorial decision to the writer instead of letting compression absorb it silently; balance distributes the shortfall and is right only where no term is genuinely fixed.
An optional span may accompany it where a target length is known. Length is otherwise an output, reported after composition rather than set before it.
Any setting may be overridden for a declared region: frame prose at one configuration, catalog or quoted material at another. The override is an exception to the document's configuration and is declared as such. It is not a property of the document and not a setting of its own, since what makes a region exceptional is precisely that the rest of the document is not like it.
Each posture component governs a small group of settings, and the overlaps are few enough to name. This is the structural claim the ontology rests on, and it is what makes six assessments sufficient for sixteen settings.
plain, inversely, and shares ground with stamina. A fluent reader wants terms unglossed and coinage travelling on first mention.spread, sparse, settled, and linked, inversely as capacity always does, and shares ground with fluency. Fluency decides whether the reader holds a compressed form; stamina decides whether a reader who lacks it can infer it from context, and the two disagree routinely in the population that matters most---specialists at the end of a hard week. Low stamina wants distributed contrast, slow concept arrival, a viewpoint that stays put, and sentences that open on ground already prepared. All four reduce the cost of assembly, and the condition that raises one raises the rest. Stamina also governs sequent, at the base less a declared discount, chronological order being a weaker call on the same fact.spread and plain, inversely, and overrides fluency wherever the two disagree. A reader with appetite is asked even where capacity would permit indulgence.bare, flat, attribute, invite, and iuxta. Rising scrutiny lowers bare so that claims arrive defended, lowers flat where provenance is itself information, moves attribution toward agent, and lowers invite only so far as actual standing supports. iuxta runs the other way and is the one setting scrutiny raises: an adversarial reader re-times the material whether or not invited, so epoch marking costs less than the challenge it forestalls.place, priority, and single. The less of a document a reader consumes, the more the recurring vocabulary must reduce to the message.steady directly---alone among the six, it rises and falls with its setting---and modulates settled and invite. The magnitudes are continuous: the shortfall against the obliged professional case, (0.90 - oblige) over 0.90 clamped to the unit range, scales the full-scale deltas of steady less 0.60, settled less 0.35, and invite plus 0.30, with place moving to early once the shortfall reaches 0.60. A reader who may leave is recruited by valence movement and by a mobile viewpoint, and cannot be mandated at all. Headroom and scrutiny set steady for a reader who must read; obligation is what decides whether that reader exists.A setting governed by more than one component will sometimes receive two different answers. The rule is uniform: take the value nearer the light pole, conceding a step toward the stronger pull.
flat is the case that shows it. An adversarial reader wants perspectival layers carrying the provenance of every claim; a depleted reader cannot hold three anchors open to the end of a sentence. The resolution is not to abandon provenance but to move it, out of syntax and into structure---named attribution in the sentence, an explicit apparatus beside it---and the setting lands high with a concession downward. bare resolves the same way, since pre-emptive defense is itself load and a depleted reader cannot carry it however adversarial the setting.
The transform is reader-driven with four exceptions, each a fact about the document rather than about who reads it.
cadence is declared from document kind. The same reader takes different rhythms for a catalog and an argument, and no posture component distinguishes them. One constraint is enforced regardless: distribution needs span, so spread at 0.70 and above excludes staccato. Below that, cadence is free, and long-breath sentences carrying concentrated figures are a real register that no derivation should forbid.
steady takes an override from genuine emergency. Steadiness applied to a real emergency reads as negligence, and no assessment of the reader detects this.
priority takes an override wherever extent is fixed externally, by a form, a limit, or a house standard, whatever triage would otherwise suggest.
office is declared from what the document does with its facts. iuxta and sequent resolve from scrutiny and stamina as any other setting would, and the declaration sets floors beneath them that do not yield. No assessment of the reader distinguishes a document that builds on past fact from one that judges the action which produced it, and the two want opposite treatments of the same true material.
Seven couplings survive the reorganization and belong to the transform rather than to any one instrument.
invite and place multiply rather than add. A forceful ask placed early reads as command; the same ask deferred reads as a conclusion the reader arrived at.spread and cadence can contradict. Full distribution in a clipped register has no span to distribute across. Resolve by lengthening the sentences, by lowering spread, or by declaring a local override.linked and single both produce coherence. Where every sentence opens on prepared ground, the whole burden of emphasis falls on which vocabulary recurs, which makes single load-bearing rather than optional.spread low throughout removes contrast as an emphasis mechanism. Density becomes the baseline, and emphasis must come from placement and recurrence instead.sparse and ground work as one operation. Slowing the arrival of concepts repays only where the concepts that arrive are properly founded.iuxta and sequent are generated together. Where sequent runs more than 0.35 above iuxta, the transform raises iuxta to close the gap, since order without epoch is worse than either alone.sequent and place trade. At 0.70 and above, composition sequence belongs to the chronology and is no longer available to carry the message, so place loses defer and single rises 0.15. The narrowing stays inside what triage already allows rather than overriding it.Two arithmetic conditions belong here rather than in an implementation. Every scalar clamps to the range 0.0 to 1.0, since high fluency together with high appetite drives plain and spread below zero if they are left unbounded and a floor is as necessary as a ceiling. And invite is the one setting whose curve is not monotone, peaking at scrutiny 0.50 exactly, so its off-grid values interpolate along three declared points rather than being reasoned to from the ends.
Every configuration emits with center, tolerance, and yield. Tolerance widens wherever posture components disagree, which is the honest representation of an uncertain assessment and the signal that the trial stage will do real work.
The transform runs as a declared first stage that emits a visible configuration before any prose is composed.

The instrument resolves this to a configuration and states it --- centers, tolerances, yield directions, and the couplings it applied. Composition follows only after.
Three returns justify the extra stage. The translation becomes auditable, so a writer who disagrees with an inference corrects the posture rather than fighting the prose. The emitted configuration is reusable independently of the document that occasioned it. And the trial procedure acquires structure: a first draft takes the centers, a second takes the tolerance edge the first draft's reception implicates, and a third is synthesized from a measured difference.
Posture may be given partially. Unstated components resolve to the settled-professional default and widen their tolerance, so that an under-specified request looks under-specified rather than average.
An archetype roster cannot enumerate this space and should not attempt it. What it can do is span the space, so that any two attempts bracket the target and a third interpolates in a known direction.
Build it over posture rather than over genre: headroom bands against triage behaviors against scrutiny levels. Three headroom bands, four triage behaviors, and three scrutiny levels yield thirty-six entries; four headroom bands yield forty-eight. The corners are the extreme postures and the interior is the ordinary professional range, which is what gives two neighboring attempts their bracketing property.
Each entry carries its configuration and its gradients: the two or three single-setting moves that adjust it for the nearest posture deviations. An entry with gradients is a local map. An entry without them is a lookup, and lookups fail exactly when the reader is not on the list.
Derivations and the roster are one artifact seen from two sides. A derivation is the transform applied to one posture with its reasoning shown; the roster is the set of derivations whose results were worth caching. Write the derivations, and the roster is their index.
Diagnosis stays with the writer. Every input to the transform is an assessment of a specific reader in a specific week, and a confident transform applied to a wrong posture configures with precision for an audience elsewhere, compounding the mismatch rather than exposing it.
Accuracy stays with the writer. A well-configured document delivers a wrong finding efficiently, and no setting registers anything amiss.
Standing stays with the writer. Low invite presupposes an authority held independently; configuring a firm ask expresses a right rather than conferring one.
The document's own nature stays with the writer. Whether this is a catalog or an argument, whether the situation is a genuine emergency, whether the length is fixed by something outside the reading, and whether the document builds on past fact or judges the action that produced it are facts the transform cannot infer from any assessment of the audience, and they are the four places where a reader-derived setting must be overruled. The fourth is the only one whose misdeclaration produces a document that is wrong rather than one that is merely costly.
Generative inventory stays elsewhere. These settings position prose. They do not stock a lexicon, and the compact pole of plain leaves the writer to supply what a maximum-density instrument would provide.
The instruments were built by cataloguing the adjustments a draft admits, and the catalogue is accurate: every one of those adjustments is real, and each can be moved while the content stays fixed. What a catalogue compiled from the writer's side cannot show is that the adjustments do not vary freely. A viewpoint that must stay put and a contrast that must be distributed are not two decisions that happen to agree; they are one fact about a depleted reader, arriving at the writer in two disguises and demanding to be settled twice. Configuration felt like an exercise in holding many things in balance because the thing they balanced against had no name in the apparatus.
Given a name, it stops being a balance. Six facts about who is reading determine thirteen of the settings, and what remains is what the reader was never going to answer---what kind of document this is, whether the situation is an emergency, whether the length was ever the writer's to choose, and whether the facts are being gathered for what comes next or weighed against what was already done. Those four are worth their exception. A model that derived them from the audience would be describing a writer who has stopped asking what is being made.
The fourth arrived last and is the one that shows why the other three are a class rather than a list. Delivery was defined as what moves while content holds still, and the same true facts, differently ordered, do not merely land differently---they mean differently. Sequence is the one adjustment on the delivery side that reaches through to the content side, which is why it had to be declared and could not be derived, and why the declaration names an office rather than a preference.
