Something happens when certain sentences arrive. The pace of reading shifts, a breath lengthens, and a passage that seemed merely informational begins to feel inevitable---its words settling into place with a weight that exceeds their meaning. The experience is common among attentive readers, almost universal, and almost never identified for what it is. The prose was composing itself musically, and the reader was receiving a performance whose program was never announced.
This phenomenon is real and describable. Prose composed with attention to its sonic properties operates on two channels simultaneously---the semantic channel, which carries meaning, and the musical channel, which carries rhythm, texture, pitch, and dynamic variation through the physical medium of language. The semantic channel is the one readers are trained to attend. The musical channel operates without invitation, shaping the reading experience at a level below conscious interpretation, touching the reader somatically before the mind has finished parsing the sentence. A reader may close a chapter of Hawthorne feeling strangely satisfied without locating the satisfaction in the plot. A passage of Shakespeare may persist in the mind long after its argument has been absorbed, lingering as a rhythmic shape rather than a propositional content. A paragraph of Toni Morrison may produce an emotional response disproportionate to its narrative events, because the events were only half the delivery mechanism.
The musical channel is a parallel carrier of content---a second voice running alongside meaning, delivering what words alone cannot fully transmit.
This essay examines that parallel carrier---its dimensions, its techniques, its practitioners, and its availability to any writer willing to compose for the ear as deliberately as for the mind. The aspiration here is to expand the compositional vocabulary available to the reader who writes, and to sharpen the receptive vocabulary of the reader who listens, even when they do not yet know they are listening.
Ezra Pound, cataloging the ways language becomes charged with meaning, identified three properties available to the literary artist. He named them in ABC of Reading (1934) with the precision of a craftsman labeling tools[^1]:
Phanopoeia casts images upon the visual imagination---"throwing the object (fixed or moving) on to the visual imagination." This is the property of language that makes readers see: a crimson curtain blown by wind in a poem of Catullus; the fog that creeps through a Conrad paragraph; the scarlet letter itself, burning on Hester Prynne's breast. Phanopoeia translates most readily across languages, according to Pound, because visual images survive the passage between tongues with much of their force intact.
Melopoeia charges words with musical properties that direct meaning through sound and rhythm, "inducing emotional correlations by the sound and rhythm of the speech." This is the property that makes readers hear---or, more precisely, that touches the inner ear so that prose arrives as physical experience, felt before it is understood. Melopoeia is the primary subject of this essay, though it cannot be fully understood apart from its companions.
Logopoeia operates as what Pound called "the dance of the intellect among words"---using words in special relation to their expected contexts, stimulating associations that layer additional meaning over what the words denote. Logopoeia is the dimension of controlled surprise, where a word's placement among other words activates resonances that the word in isolation would leave dormant. When Shakespeare has Hamlet say that death is "the undiscovered country from whose bourn no traveler returns," the word bourn---a boundary, a limit---does intellectual work beyond its denotation, pulling the listener's mind simultaneously toward geographical exploration, permanent exile, and the finality of a border permitting only one-way passage. The intellect dances because the word occupies multiple contexts at once, and the resonance among those contexts generates meaning that no single context contains.
Logopoeia contributes directly to melopoeia in practice, and their interaction deserves attention. When a writer selects a word for its logopoetic density---its capacity to set multiple contexts vibrating simultaneously---that word often arrives with a richer harmonic profile than a word chosen for denotation alone. The reader's inner ear resonates with the word's own sound and with the sounds of the contexts it evokes, producing a kind of semantic overtone series. A simple word producing a single clear note serves clarity; a logopoetically charged word producing a chord of associations serves depth. The two effects are complementary, and the writer who commands both selects words that satisfy meaning, music, and intellectual resonance in a single act of composition. Pound observed that logopoeia stimulates both phanopoeia and melopoeia through association---the dance of the intellect sets images flickering and new sounds vibrating. The most fully realized prose achieves all three simultaneously: the reader sees, hears, and thinks through the language in a single act of reception, each channel amplifying the others.
This convergence explains why logopoeia matters to an essay about melopoeia. The reader developing a compositional ear benefits from understanding that the musical dimension of a word includes its intellectual resonances---that the richness of a passage's sound is partly the richness of its associations sounding together. The sonic channel carries more when the intellectual channel loads it. A passage dense with logopoetic choices produces a reading experience that feels fuller, more reverberant, more satisfying to the inner ear than a passage carrying equivalent meaning through simpler diction. The fullness is real; it consists of the additional overtones that multiply-resonant words generate in the reader's subvocal processing.
These three properties are separable for analysis and inseparable in practice. Each can also operate independently, which is why a reader may experience melopoeia without recognizing it---the musical channel was delivering content while conscious attention was occupied with semantic meaning and visual imagery, and the music reached the body before the mind caught up.
The scholarly tradition studying these properties is called prosody---a word whose etymology reveals more than its current usage suggests. It descends from the Greek prosoidia: a song sung to instrumental music[^2]. The earliest systematic study of how language sounds understood that language and music share a common substrate---that the same properties governing musical composition (pitch, duration, intensity, timbre, rhythm, harmonic relationship) are present in spoken and written language, available for deliberate compositional use. Prose prosody applies this study to writing that employs rhythm without formal meter.
Additional terminology enriches the vocabulary available to the reader who wants to hear more precisely. Euphony names the quality of harmonious sound combinations---vowels and consonants arranged so the ear receives them with pleasure, as when a phrase rolls through liquid consonants and open vowels with the smoothness of a well-tuned instrument. Cacophony names the harsh, discordant quality that serves equally deliberate compositional purposes---producing tension, resistance, and dis-ease through sound combinations the ear receives as abrasive, the way consonant clusters in wretched or scratched force the articulatory system through rough terrain. Both are tools; the composer selects between them as a musician selects between consonance and dissonance, each serving the passage's emotional requirements. The Ukrainian scholar O.P. Vorobyova developed a five-dimensional classification of musicality in prose: explicit phonosemantic imitation, imitation of musical forms, dominant or counterpoint motif as plot pivot, hidden musical rhythm and melodies, and artistic representation of music perceived by characters[^3]. Gerard Manley Hopkins contributed the concept of inscape---the interior logic that makes a natural form or linguistic pattern feel inevitable, so that altering any element damages the whole---which applies directly to how consonant patterns and rhythmic structures create the sensation that a passage could have been written no other way[^4].
What distinguishes prose possessing melopoeia is the presence of sonic intention. In much competent prose, words are selected for denotation, connotation, and clarity; their sound is incidental, a byproduct of the meaning-selection process. In musical prose, sound becomes a selection criterion alongside meaning---a word preferred over its synonym because its vowel continues a color pattern, because its consonant profile provides textural contrast, because its syllable count serves a rhythmic shape the sentence is building toward. The two selection processes operate in tandem, and the result is prose in which meaning and music reinforce each other, producing effects that neither channel achieves alone.
The ear is among the body's most exquisitely tactile organs, so sensitive that the tympanic membrane responds to fluctuations in air pressure smaller than the diameter of a hydrogen atom. At the threshold of hearing---around 3000 Hz---the eardrum's displacement measures approximately 10^-9^ centimeters[^5], a distance belonging to the scale of atomic structure, a world where physical force meets its own mathematical description. The membrane vibrates, the ossicles transmit, the cochlear hair cells transduce mechanical motion into electrical signal, and the brain receives what it processes as sound. The entire chain begins with pressure variation so delicate that a feather's weight would overwhelm the mechanism entirely.
Sound, in other words, is touch---touch refined to extraordinary sensitivity, a haptic encounter between fluctuating air and the most responsive membrane the human body possesses. This has direct consequences for the emotional life of prose. Haptic experience falls naturally into emotional categories: rough and smooth, sharp and soft, warm and cool, pressing and releasing. These are the textures of the physical world as the body knows it, and sound inherits them through its physical nature, because the ear is touched by every sound it receives.
A passage dense with plosive consonants---b, d, k, t, p, g---touches the ear with percussive sharpness, the way gravel presses through thin sole leather. A passage flowing through nasals and open vowels---m, n, ng threaded through ah, oh, oo---touches it with something closer to the warmth of fur or fine fabric drawn slowly across the back of the hand. These are embodied experiences, registered by a membrane designed for the most extraordinary sensitivity the human body possesses. The mechanism operates without the reader's awareness or consent. A passage whose sonic texture is percussive and angular produces a reading experience that feels alert, tense, slightly braced. A passage whose texture is warm and sustained produces ease, receptivity, forward momentum. The writer who attends to sonic texture shapes the reader's physical experience of the prose at a level more fundamental than argument, because the haptic channel processes faster than the interpretive channel, and the body has already responded before the mind finishes parsing the sentence.
This explains why certain passages produce emotional responses that seem to exceed their semantic content. The meaning delivers one message; the music delivers the same message with an intensity that meaning alone cannot reach, or delivers something the meaning has no words for. The convergence of both channels on the same emotional target produces the experience readers describe as being moved by prose---a word whose kinesthetic root is worth noticing. The body registers the music, the mind interprets the result as emotion, and the reader attributes the whole experience to the story, the character, or the idea, rarely suspecting that the sound itself was doing half the work.
Musical prose begins at the phoneme. English vowels occupy a pitch space: front vowels---ee, ih, eh---sit higher in perceived brightness; back vowels---oo, oh, ah---sit lower, darker, more resonant. This brightness-darkness spectrum is measurable; formant frequencies of front vowels are acoustically higher than those of back vowels, producing the same perceptual correspondence between pitch and luminosity that makes a piccolo sound bright and a cello sound dark.
Consonants divide into textural families. Plosives---p, b, t, d, k, g---are percussive events, sound created by the sudden release of blocked air, each one a small detonation in the articulatory space. Fricatives---f, v, s, z, sh, zh---produce sustained texture, turbulent airflow generating continuous sound, the consonant equivalent of a bowed string. Liquids---l and r---create the sensation of laminar flow: sound that moves without turbulence, carrying the voice smoothly from one vowel to the next the way a current carries a swimmer between stillnesses. The name itself, liquid, reflects this perceptual quality; these consonants sustain voicing continuously, producing seamless transitions that the articulatory system experiences as resistance that yields---the phonemic equivalent of walking through water, where the medium is present, carrying momentum forward rather than interrupting it. Nasals---m, n, ng---are the warmest consonants, resonating through the nasal cavity with a humming continuity that connects syllables the way a sustained organ note holds a chord together across a change in voicing.
A writer selecting between synonyms on phonemic grounds---choosing murmur over whisper for the nasal warmth that binds it to surrounding words, or shatter over break for the fricative-plosive percussion that enacts rupture at the sonic level---composes at the instrumental level before the semantic level has registered its preference. This is the craft of choosing the sound-shape of a thought as deliberately as its logical shape.
Melopoeia resolves into several independently variable dimensions, each available for deliberate compositional use. In practice these dimensions combine and interact; their separation here serves analysis and the development of compositional awareness. The reader who begins attending to one dimension will find the others gradually becoming audible, the way a musician who first hears only melody in an orchestral passage gradually begins to hear harmonic structure, bass movement, and the interplay of instrumental timbres.
Vowel color sequencing---attending to the pitch trajectory of successive stressed vowels---is the most immediately accessible musical dimension, and the most rewarding entry point for the reader developing a compositional ear. A sequence of front vowels creates brightness: gleaming, keen, brilliance cast a high, sharp light across the passage. A shift to back vowels deepens the register: rumble, hollow, somber lower the acoustic floor, producing a sense of enclosure and gravity. The transition between vowel colors---the moment brightness yields to shadow, or darkness lifts into clarity---is a compositional event equivalent to a key change in music.
Notice the difference between "the light gleamed across the field" and "the glow crept over the hollow." Both sentences describe illumination of a landscape. The first is bright, forward-leaning---front vowels in gleamed and field, the crisp l sounds cutting through with a clean edge. The second is dark, weighted, interior---back vowels in glow, over, hollow, the open oh sounds creating a sense of depth that the imagery alone does not produce. Read both aloud, or attend to how the words would feel in the mouth: the first sentence lives near the front of the articulatory space; the second settles deeper, toward the throat and the chest. The information is comparable; the experience diverges, and the divergence lives in the vowel color.
Listen for this the next time a passage of prose shifts emotional register without an obvious cause. The vowels may have changed color while the reader's attention was elsewhere. A passage describing dawn that opens in dark vowels and gradually brightens through a vowel color shift gives the reader the experience of dawn sonically as well as visually. The two channels reinforce each other, and the experience deepens without the reader being able to explain quite why---until they listen for the vowels.
Consonant texture provides the rhythmic skeleton of prose. Plosive-heavy passages feel percussive, staccato, urgent---each consonant a struck surface, each word arriving with the definiteness of a tap on stone. Fricative-heavy passages sustain and flow, carrying texture the way a bowed instrument sustains sound across the duration of a note. Liquid and nasal passages create warmth, connection, continuity---the sensation of unbroken motion, language carrying the reader forward without sudden edge or interruption.
The transition points between consonant textures are the structural joints of the music. A shift from liquid consonants to plosives is a rhythmic event---the prose hardens, and the reader registers the hardening physically, in the way the articulatory system (even in silent reading) processes the change from flow to percussion. A shift from plosives to fricatives releases accumulated tension, diffusing percussive energy into sustained ambient texture. These transitions reward the same compositional attention a conductor gives to orchestral color---the moment the strings yield to woodwinds, or the brass enters over a sustained timpani roll, reshaping the entire sonic landscape in a single breath.
Hopkins understood consonant texture as deeply as any writer in English. His concept of inscape operates partly through consonant management so precise that substituting any word damages something beyond semantic content---the sonic architecture shifts, the passage ceases to feel inevitable. When reading Hopkins, attend to how consonant clusters carry structural load the way columns carry an arch: remove one and the surrounding structure redistributes weight, and the redistribution is audible. This is consonant texture as engineering, and the reader who begins hearing it in Hopkins will begin hearing similar engineering in prose wherever a writer has composed for the ear.
Sentence length variation is the broadest rhythmic tool and the most immediately powerful. A long sentence accumulates momentum, carries the reader forward through subordinate clauses, delays resolution, builds expectation through syntactic suspension---and then a shorter sentence offers arrival, a place to settle and absorb what has been building. The contrast between accumulation and arrival is itself the music; the alternation creates a rhythm that the reader's body entrains to, a pulse of building and releasing that mirrors the rhythm of breath.
Hemingway's short declaratives are musical precisely because their uniformity creates a rhythmic ground against which any variation registers as dynamic change. When a longer sentence appears in Hemingway, it feels like a change in breathing---an expansion of the chest after a series of controlled exhalations. The reader registers this somatically, because reading pace is entrained to sentence length, and changes in pace produce changes in bodily state. Reading a Hemingway passage aloud and noticing where the breathing shifts reveals the musical events; they live in the transitions.
The long periodic sentence---Hawthorne's characteristic instrument---creates a different music entirely. Subordinate clause builds upon subordinate clause, each adding qualification, nuance, delay, and the grammatical resolution is postponed, sometimes across thirty or forty words, while the reader's syntactic expectation is held in a state analogous to harmonic suspension in music. The dominant seventh chord anticipates the tonic; the subordinate clause anticipates the main clause. Both produce forward momentum through the tension of delayed satisfaction, and both deliver, when resolution arrives, a sense of completion that is felt in the body as much as understood in the mind.
Virginia Woolf in To the Lighthouse demonstrates a third possibility: the sentence that seems to resolve but continues, that offers a cadence and then gently reopens, creating a rhythm of continuous modulation rather than contrast between long and short. Her sentences breathe---they expand and contract, pause and resume, their length varying as breath varies, responsive to the interior state of the character whose consciousness the prose inhabits. Reading Woolf, attend to the way the sentences carry your own breathing along with them, how a long flowing passage produces a different respiratory rhythm than a series of short observations, and how the shift between these rhythms mirrors the character's own shifting attention.
Temporal architecture governs the reader's pace across larger structures---the paragraph, the chapter, the work as a whole. Sentence length variation operates locally; temporal architecture operates structurally, controlling how the reader moves through the work's larger movements.
A chapter composed of uniformly moderate sentences at uniform density produces a reading pace that habituates and drifts. A chapter that varies its density---passages of intense compression followed by passages of expansion, rapid narrative followed by sustained reflection---sustains alertness through rhythmic unpredictability. The reader remains engaged because the pace keeps changing, because each new paragraph offers a slightly different rhythmic environment from the last.
This structural dynamic variation is the prose equivalent of what musicians manage across the arc of a symphony or a sonata. Mozart demonstrates the principle with unparalleled naturalness: each passage feels simultaneously surprising and inevitable, each transition arriving with an accessibility that suggests the listener already expected it, though they could not have predicted it---the same effortlessness that characterizes an infant's bliss, where everything is received as if it could have been no other way. The aspiration of temporal architecture in prose is this same quality of prepared inevitability: to compose the reader's journey through a work so that each arrival feels discovered rather than constructed, so that the transitions between movements seem as natural as the passage between waking thoughts, each one following from the last with a necessity that could only be demonstrated, never argued.
Semantic-sonic alignment is the dimension where melopoeia achieves its most powerful effects. When the rhythm and texture of a passage mirror its content---through structural correspondence, through the prose performing the meaning it carries---the reader receives that meaning through two channels simultaneously, and the combined delivery produces an intensity that neither channel reaches alone.
Shakespeare's "Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow / Creeps in this petty pace from day to day" enacts temporal stagnation through rhythmic repetition. The spondaic weight of petty pace physically slows the line. The trochaic inversion at creeps forces the stress onto the word that names sluggishness. The prosody performs the meaning---the reader's voice, even the inner voice of silent reading, is compelled to slow, to creep, to experience the very stagnation the words describe. Read the line aloud, or feel it silently in the mouth, and notice how the articulatory system itself resists speed: the consonant clusters force deceleration, the repeated and holds the voice in place, and the experience of forming the words becomes the experience of what the words mean.
Morrison achieves alignment in Beloved through a different mechanism. When the narrative approaches the central trauma, the sentences fragment. Long flowing passages give way to short, percussive bursts. The rhythm shatters. The reader's experience of the prose---its disruption, its loss of flow, its sudden jagged edges---mirrors the character's experience of traumatic memory intruding into narrative coherence. The fragmentation is the content, delivered through the musical channel because the semantic channel alone cannot carry it. When reading Morrison, attend to the moments where your own reading pace breaks---where you stumble, pause, re-read. These disruptions are composed; the prose is performing its subject at the level of your physical reading experience.
Harmonic density measures the degree to which sounds within a passage create relationships with each other---echoes, inversions, variations, returns. Low harmonic density produces transparent prose; each sentence exists independently of its neighbors' sound-world. High harmonic density creates a phonemic motif structure, where recurring sound patterns bind passages together below the level of semantic argument, the way a recurring harmonic motif binds sections of a symphony together below the level of melodic content.
Bulgakov achieves extraordinary harmonic density in the Yershalaim chapters of The Master and Margarita. The Pontius Pilate sequences carry an almost liturgical cadence---heavy with sustained vowels, deliberate in rhythm, architecturally balanced in a way that evokes ritual procession. The Moscow chapters operate in a faster, more percussive, more chaotic register. The reader hears the shift between worlds before analyzing it; the dual narrative structure is audible, the two settings distinguished by their fundamentally different sonic environments. When returning to the novel, listen specifically for this shift at each chapter transition---the change in the prose's acoustic atmosphere announces which world you have entered before any character appears.
Dylan Thomas, in his adaptation of Stevenson's The Beach of Falesá[^6], builds harmonic density through vowel surges---long sequences of open vowels that crest and break, consonant clusters that thicken texture the way harmonic layers thicken in orchestral writing. The parallel between the exploitation of the island's natural resources and the exploitation of its displaced laborers arrives through rhythmic and textural intensification. The prose sounds heavier, more congested, more constrained as the thematic pressure builds, and the sonic environment becomes the moral environment---the reader feels the compression of colonial exploitation in the density of the language itself.
Syntactic counterpoint---Shakespeare's supreme contribution to English---is the capacity to run multiple rhythmic and semantic lines simultaneously. In dramatic verse, the metrical pattern (iambic pentameter) provides a ground rhythm against which the speech rhythm of actual utterance creates a countermelody. Enjambment, caesura, feminine endings, trochaic substitution---each device produces tension between the metrical expectation and the spoken reality. The listener holds two rhythmic structures in mind simultaneously, and the interaction between them carries emotional content that neither structure generates alone. Here logopoeia and melopoeia converge: the intellect dances with the music, the dual awareness---of what the meter expects and what the speech delivers---is both an intellectual and a sonic experience, and the resonance between these two forms of awareness produces the depth that makes Shakespeare's verse inexhaustible under repeated reading.
Prose writers achieve counterpoint through different means---periodic syntax against short interjections, Latinate diction against Anglo-Saxon, abstract argument against concrete imagery, the rhythm of logic against the rhythm of sensation---but the principle holds across forms. Two or more simultaneous patterns, whose interaction generates meaning that neither carries independently, constitute counterpoint. The reader who has experienced Shakespearean counterpoint and recognized it possesses a template for hearing it in prose; the recognition transfers across genres and centuries.
Resolution and suspension function in prose exactly as in tonal music. A rhythmic or phonemic pattern, once established, creates expectation. Satisfying the expectation produces closure; delaying it produces tension and forward momentum. The writer manages these expectations across multiple scales simultaneously---within the sentence, across paragraphs, through chapters---and the reader's experience of the prose is shaped by the constant interplay of buildup and release.
Hawthorne's long periods are exercises in delayed resolution. His sentences suspend grammatical completion through successive subordinate expansions until the main clause arrives with both grammatical and rhythmic closure. F.O. Matthiessen, in American Renaissance (1941), treated Hawthorne's prose style extensively within the framework of American literary expression[^7], and one scholarly analysis describes his sentences as carrying "the rhythms of poetry as sonorous as scripture"[^8]. The satisfaction a reader experiences without recognizing its source is precisely this: the pleasure of resolution after suspension, received bodily through the entrainment of reading rhythm. The semantic content of the main clause matters, yet the satisfaction of its arrival---the rhythmic event of resolution---operates independently of what the clause says, a formal pleasure, a musical pleasure, registered by the body before the mind categorizes it.
Nathaniel Hawthorne composes primarily through sentence architecture. The periodic sentence is his instrument, suspension and resolution his emotional tools. His melopoeia is the music of syntax itself---long subordinated periods whose rhythmic accumulation produces the reading experience of gravity, moral weight, the slow turning of a consciousness that will not arrive at judgment prematurely. Matthiessen recognized his "unique prose style"[^9], and the broader scholarship consistently describes effects that are musical in nature---his style called "ornate and subtle, characterized by long, intricate sentences" whose main clause often arrives only at the end, after a journey through qualification and nuance[^10]. What is revealing is how consistently the scholarship describes his musical effects without naming them as musical; critics attend to the rhythmic properties of his prose while categorizing their observations under "style" or "syntax," which is itself diagnostic of how deeply the musical channel operates below conscious analysis. Reading Hawthorne aloud, attend to the syntactic suspensions: notice how the subordinate clauses create forward momentum, how the postponed main clause produces a physical sense of anticipation, and how the resolution, when it comes, settles the body as well as the mind.
Shakespeare achieves melopoeia through counterpoint---the interplay between metrical ground and speech rhythm, between sound-sense alignment and deliberate divergence. His verse teaches the ear to hold multiple simultaneous patterns, a skill that transfers directly to the perception of melopoeia in prose. The most productive attention goes to the tension---the moments where the spoken rhythm works against the metrical expectation, where a trochaic substitution at the start of a line forces emphasis onto a word that would otherwise pass without weight. Listen for the moments the meter bends: those are the moments where the music carries its heaviest semantic freight, where logopoeia and melopoeia fuse so completely that the intellectual dance and the sonic dance are a single event.
Virginia Woolf composed with explicit awareness of prose musicality. She sought to capture "the sound of the sea" in the prose of The Waves---the formal properties of marine rhythm rather than its content: recurrence, variation, the ceaseless pulse underlying surface change[^11]. To the Lighthouse varies its sentence rhythms in direct correspondence with shifts in consciousness---the flowing periods of Mrs. Ramsay's interior life, the staccato observations of Lily Briscoe, the sweeping impersonal cadences of the "Time Passes" section, where the prose takes on the rhythm of natural process itself. Vorobyova's multimodal analysis identifies alliteration, assonance, and various modifications of repetition---parallelism, anaphora, epiphora---as devices creating a textual music resembling fugal form in its patterns of recurrence and variation[^12]. Pound himself was precise about this. For phonemic-level melopoeia---vowel color, consonant texture, the haptic grain of individual words---the examples drawn from English-language writers remain the direct demonstrations. Conrad's Heart of Darkness occupies a fascinating intermediate position: the melopoeia is English-native at the phonemic level, yet composed by an ear trained in Polish and French sonic traditions, producing textures that a native English writer might not have found.
The capacity to hear melopoeia in prose is already present in every reader. The ear is already doing the work; the body is already responding. The gap is between reception and recognition---between receiving the musical channel's effects and knowing that one is receiving them. Closing this gap requires directed attention, and the following practices develop that attention incrementally, each building on the last.
Read with your articulatory system. Even in silent reading, the laryngeal and lingual muscles activate in ghosted versions of the movements speech would require---a phenomenon called subvocalization that psycholinguistic research has confirmed through electromyographic studies[^15]. Musical prose is composed for this subvocal performance. The reader who does not have an opportunity to read aloud can still engage the articulatory system more deliberately by attending to how the words would feel in the mouth---the placement of tongue, the shaping of lips, the rise and fall of the jaw as the silent voice moves through a passage. The development of listening attentiveness is cumulative and self-reinforcing. Each dimension that becomes audible enriches the reading experience, and the enriched experience motivates further attention. Within weeks of deliberate practice, the reader begins hearing melopoeia in prose that previously seemed merely competent---discovering that writers appreciated for content had been composing for the ear all along, that the satisfaction attributed to plot or character or imagery was partly sonic, partly haptic, partly the work of a musical channel that had been performing without acknowledgment.
