Parabolic Syllogism: Review, Expansion, and the Built Skill

The basis record for the parabolic syllogism skill: its source, the reading of intent that shaped it, the precedent it stands on, the synthesis it adds, the decisions and corrections made along the way, and the open agenda for its next revision. The skill file is the instrument; this file is the reason for every part of it.

Standing declaration

This document is the authoritative artifact for the parabolic-syllogism effort. It is written to stand complete in itself: a future session possessing only this file --- without conversational history --- has everything required to resume, audit, or extend the work without retrograde. Every revision supersedes its predecessor in full; no revision may summarize away a prior constraint to save length. Where a later round narrows or reverses an earlier decision, the reversal and its rationale are recorded within the resulting artifact, rather than silently dropping the earlier text. This declaration is itself a standing requirement and governs how this document, and its successors, are to be written.

Record at a glance

Basis: the source

The skill was built from a YAML style sketch submitted on 2026-10-05, with the request to identify its intent, consider its strategy and avenues for expanding creative solution discovery, brainstorm beyond it in the manner of hyper-analytical-solution-engine but more freely, and optimize it into a regular style skill. The sketch is reproduced in Appendix A exactly as submitted, typos included, so that every later change can be traced against it.

Intent: two jobs under one name

Read as a whole, the source does two jobs.

Outwardly it is a rhetoric of the enthymeme: the syllogism with one member left unstated, which Aristotle places at the center of persuasion --- in Roberts' translation, the "substance of rhetorical persuasion"[^1] --- and which works because, where a premise is familiar, "the hearer adds it himself"[^2]. The writer supplies premises and momentum; the reader supplies the conclusion and owns it for having supplied it.

Inwardly, and this is the more valuable reading, the clause about a "deliberately arbitrary metaphor" is a creative-synthesis lever aimed at the model. A premise forced through a foreign vehicle must find a structural fit it would never retrieve by frequency. The arbitrary vehicle is the source's engine; everything else in the sketch is the chassis built to carry it.

The source's proportions ran the other way: the foundation and strategy blocks describe the reader's experience at length, while the vehicle clause, which does the generative work, receives one long and tangled sentence. The built skill reverses that proportion. This reading is the single decision from which most others follow.

Bias note. Synectics and bisociation dominate the creative-method literature partly by publication survivorship: breakthroughs reached by remote analogy are written up; forced fits that yielded nothing are not. Their prevalence is evidence of visibility, not proof of efficacy. The skill therefore carries a "draw again rather than force-fit" rule and does not assume the remote vehicle always yields. Whether it yields often enough to justify the cost is the first question for evaluation.

Tradition note. The Gospel passages are cited as external authority for how the parable form has been received and described, not as warrant for any spiritual claim, and not to set the parable beside other traditions as equivalent. The correspondences drawn to them --- calibration to the hearer, private explanation to the disciples --- are observations about compositional structure only.

The focus principle

Parable and parabola descend from one Greek word, parabole, "a throwing beside," a juxtaposition --- from para-, alongside, and ballein, to throw[^7][^8]. The geometry repays the kinship. A parabola reflects every ray arriving parallel to its axis to a single point, the focus, wherever on the curve the ray strikes[^9]; and the focus is not on the curve.

Mapped onto composition: the text is the curve; examples, images, and asides are the parallel rays; the insight is the focus, the point every element bends toward and no element occupies. This converts the source's "illuminate without articulating" from a mood into a checkable constraint, with a pass condition: a sentence that states the focus has stepped off the curve.

The correspondence is a fortunate one, not an etymological intention. Apollonius named the curve for the "application" of an area to a line, not for the parable or for its reflective property[^7][^9] (see Corrections, C3). The shared root licenses the pairing; the geometry earns it.

Eccentricity

The conic family supplies a calibration dial. Eccentricity decides whether a trajectory returns, escapes exactly, or diverges: a circle has eccentricity 0, an ellipse between 0 and 1, a parabola exactly 1, a hyperbola greater than 1[^9].

RegisterEccentricityWhat the text doesUse it for
Elliptice < 1Orbits the focus, passing near more than once; narrow gapDepleted, unfamiliar, or high-stakes readers
Parabolice = 1 (default)Exactly enough momentum to arrive; one conclusionMost persuasion
Hyperbolice > 1Opens a defined cone of admissible conclusionsBrainstorming and discovery, where plurality is the product

The hyperbolic register is where the skill meets the original request for creative discovery. It serves the purpose hyper-analytical-solution-engine serves, but reaches divergence by narrative pressure rather than parallel analytic streams. The elliptic register has a precedent noted above: the parable spoken "as they were able to hear it"[^4].

Corrections

Claims made in the conversation that produced the skill, corrected here after live verification on 2026-10-05. The skill file itself contained none of these errors.

Revision agenda

Open work for the next revision, in priority order.

  1. Blind-reader evaluation. For five deliberately mismatched subjects (e.g., a security control rationale, a grief note, a scheduling tradeoff, a theorem's intuition, a hiring decision), generate output under the skill with the key recorded separately. Give each output to a fresh reader --- a subagent with no access to the key --- and ask it to state the conclusion. Score: key recovered (inevitability); key absent from body (absence); rival conclusions offered (escape trajectory); vehicle removable without loss (ornament). Compare against the same subjects without the skill. This is the test the skill most needs and has not had.
  2. Vehicle yield. Across the evaluation, count how often the remote vehicle produced a harvest item absent from the key. If rarely, the "reject the first domain" rule may be over-correction --- distance for its own sake rather than discovery.
  3. Register invocation. Decide whether the user may name the register inline (e.g., "parabolic-syllogism, hyperbolic") and whether the skill should state that syntax.
  4. Harvest default. Decide whether the harvest should surface by default in hyperbolic register or only on request.
  5. Interfaces. Consider whether the key, once revealed by Lantern, is a candidate for coinage as a phrase-as-lemma, and whether transmission-land should govern placement of the last breadcrumb. Recorded as possibilities only; the skill is to remain independent.

Revision history

What the Record Withholds

A skill that teaches withholding needs a record that withholds nothing. The two files divide the work the way the form divides it. In parabolic syllogism skill the key is kept off the curve. Here every key is stated: the reading of intent, the precedent, the synthesis, the three errors and their repair. A later reviser who has only the skill holds a parable. A later reviser who has this record holds the lantern, and can see why each part of the curve was bent toward the point it bends toward. That makes the revision an act of judgment rather than guesswork.

# Parabolic Syllogism

Revision 6ac48ca7.

Compose so the central insight is never stated, only made inevitable.
The text supplies the premises and the momentum; the reader supplies the
conclusion, and owns it for having supplied it. The same discipline turns
inward as a discovery instrument: a premise forced through a deliberately
foreign vehicle yields conclusions that direct retrieval would not have
reached.

## The focus principle

Parable and parabola share one Greek root, *parabole*, a throwing-beside.
The geometry is the working model. A parabola gathers every ray that
arrives parallel to its axis and reflects all of them to a single point,
the focus---and the focus does not lie on the curve. The text is the
curve. Examples, images, and asides are the parallel rays. The insight is
the focus: every element is shaped to converge there, and nothing in the
text occupies that point. A sentence that states the focus has stepped
off the curve.

## Foundation

- Illuminate the central insight without articulating it; produce the
experience of understanding rather than its report.
- Let consequence act as gravity: arrange premises so the conclusion is
the only resting place available to the reader's thought.
- Prefer experiential and concrete language---weight, distance, warmth,
timing---over abstract assertion; abstraction belongs to the reader's
  completion, not the text's surface.
- Build tension through progressive withholding; each step tightens
expectation and leaves one span unbridged.
- Let momentum carry the reader across the final gap. Build the approach
so that anticipation of arrival is itself satisfying, and arrival
confirms what the approach already promised.

## The enthymeme break

A syllogism has three members; the enthymeme suppresses one. Choose which
member to withhold, because each produces a different recognition:

- **Withhold the conclusion** (default). Both premises stand in the text;
the reader draws the inference. Effect: assent.
- **Withhold the major premise.** Instances accumulate; the reader
discovers the governing principle. Effect: discovery of law.
- **Withhold the minor premise.** The principle and its consequence are
plain; the reader recognizes the case as their own, or as the one at
hand. Effect: recognition, often uncomfortable---the reader pronounces
judgment before seeing that it applies (cf. Nathan's ewe lamb before
  David, 2 Samuel 12).

Decide the mode privately before composing, and name the withheld member
to yourself in one sentence. That sentence is the **key**. It never
appears in the body.

## The arbitrary vehicle

The distinctive move. Select a metaphor whose domain is deliberately
remote from the subject---chosen for distance, not fit---and narrate it
as an apparent digression, a loose procession. The vehicle resolves only
when the reader applies the key; at that moment the digression snaps into
a second premise and breaks the enthymeme open.

Selection procedure:

1. State the key privately.
2. Choose a vehicle domain *before* testing fit, by distance from the
   subject: a craft, a natural process, a historical trade, a game, a
tool, an agricultural or liturgical cycle. Reject the first domain that
occurs; it is usually the most frequent pairing and carries no
   discovery.
3. Find the structural isomorphism: what in the vehicle bears load the way
the key bears load in the subject. If none exists after honest search,
   draw again rather than force-fit.
4. Narrate the vehicle in its own terms, with its own texture, as if it
were the subject. Do not gloss the mapping.
5. Place the subject adjacent---by proximity and juxtaposition, not by
"just as" or "similarly." The reader performs the transfer.

The remote vehicle is the creative engine. Forcing a known premise through
a foreign structure exposes features of the subject that its native
vocabulary conceals; the fit, once found, often carries implications the
key did not contain.

## Strategy

Four movements, in order, each with a governing question:

- **Atmospheric preparation** --- context that primes receptivity. *What
must the reader already feel for the conclusion to land as their own?*
- **Convergent vectors** --- several angles approaching the center without
touching it; the parallel rays. *Does each approach aim at the same
focus from a genuinely different direction?*
- **Resonance chambers** --- examples that amplify an unstated frequency;
the vehicle lives here. *Does the example sound the key without naming
  it?*
- **Breadcrumb architecture** --- inferences sequenced from far to near,
each shortening the remaining distance. *Is the last crumb close enough
to step from, far enough that the step is felt?*

Implementation: establish the territory with tangential richness; layer
implication through adjacency; let the pattern emerge as parallel
structure to the vehicle; leave semantic vacuums the reader is compelled
to fill.

## Eccentricity

A conic's eccentricity decides whether a trajectory returns, escapes
exactly, or diverges. Use it as the withholding dial:

- **Elliptic** (e < 1) --- the text orbits the focus and passes near it
more than once; the gap is narrow. For depleted, unfamiliar, or
  high-stakes readers.
- **Parabolic** (e = 1, default) --- exactly enough momentum to arrive and
no more; one convergent conclusion, unmistakable once drawn.
- **Hyperbolic** (e > 1) --- the trajectory opens; the premises admit a
family of conclusions. For brainstorming and discovery, where plurality
is the product. Define the cone: every admissible conclusion must still
  follow from the stated premises.

The user may name a register; otherwise choose by reader and purpose, and
default to parabolic.

## Discovery harvest

Applied inward, the style is a synthesis instrument. After drafting the
vehicle, read it back as a stranger and list what it entails---not only
the key, but every conclusion the premises now support. Conclusions that
were not planned are the harvest: candidate insights produced by structure
rather than retrieval. In hyperbolic register, or when the user is
exploring, surface the harvest after the body as a brief declared list,
marked as synthesis lacking precedent, with confidence stated. In
parabolic and elliptic register, keep the harvest private unless asked.

## Entailment test

Before delivery, verify:

1. **Inevitability** --- a capable reader applying the key reaches the
intended conclusion (or a member of the declared cone) and no rival.
2. **Absence** --- the key does not appear in the body, in any paraphrase.
3. **Earning** --- the vehicle bears load; removing it collapses the
   inference.
4. **Closability** --- the final gap is spannable from the last
breadcrumb. A gap the reader cannot cross is obscurity, not parable.
5. **Honesty** --- withholding governs the conclusion, never the epistemic
status of the premises. Uncertain or extrapolated premises are marked
   as such in the text.

## Failure signatures

- **Fog** --- vagueness mistaken for depth; no single focus exists. If the
key cannot be stated privately, there is nothing to withhold.
- **Moral of the fable** --- the conclusion is announced after the story.
  Cut the last sentence.
- **Forced vehicle** --- the mapping needs explanation to work. Redraw.
- **Escape trajectory** --- the reader lands on an unintended conclusion.
Lower eccentricity; add a convergent vector.
- **Ornament** --- richness that bears no load. Each detail carries a
premise or primes atmosphere, or it goes.
- **Performance** --- imagery staged to appear profound. Plainer surface;
the depth is in the structure.

## Boundaries

Disqualifying applications---answer directly instead: instructions and
procedures; security, safety, legal, medical, or compliance content where
misreading carries cost; factual lookups; any reader who asks for the
answer plainly. Withholding is a courtesy to a reader who wants to arrive;
to a reader who needs to act, it is an obstruction.

## Lantern

When the user asks for the key---"lantern," "unveil," "what's the
point"---give it in one plain sentence, then stop. The parable has already
done its work; the lantern only confirms the room the reader is standing
in.
