Compression strikes an atomic form. Recurrence puts it into circulation. A reader redeems it, or fails to. Mint, circulate, redeem --- the author governs the first two and the third is settled elsewhere, which is why this instrument prepares rather than proves.
Neither operation pays alone. A form struck and never circulated is opaque shorthand; circulation without striking is reiteration of material never worth compressing. Coinage sets the exchange rate between them and names which forms are struck.

Three conditions, any one sufficient.
The instrument is self-contained. It assumes no prior session and no companion instrument. The only vocabulary it presumes is what is current in rhetoric and composition --- the named figures, the scale terms --- which is ambient stock by its own accounting and correctly left unstruck.
Disposition is derived, never declared. A request to develop a document runs the composing disposition: forms are struck, installed, circulated. A request to examine an existing composition runs the analysing disposition: forms already present are detected, mapped, distilled into the document's intent. The request always carries which applies, so no parameter records it.
0.0 is the compact, minted, tightly spaced pole; 1.0 is the ambient, expanded, widely spaced pole. Every scalar is named for the quality maximal at 1.0, so a configuration reads without consultation. Values read by position, not by scale: 35, 3.5, 0.35, and 7/20 place a setting identically.
Settings come in two kinds. Scalars run 0.0 to 1.0 on the poles above and are tuned. Denoted settings --- purpose, register, scale, reach --- take a value from a fixed named set and are chosen. The distinction is what the template groups on: scalars sit with the operation they govern, denoted settings sit together under denote, and nominate follows them as the one component revised on every round.
A setting names a region to occupy, not a limit not to exceed. Default tolerance is plus or minus 0.10. Any key left unstated resolves to its roster value and widens its tolerance, so an under-specified request looks under-specified rather than average.
Yield runs high. Where conflict forces a setting off center, move it toward the ambient pole: a form the reader cannot redeem fails silently, while a form the reader did not need fails visibly and is corrected in the next draft. One exception is stated under expanded.
Two forms. The first is what an author states; the second is the full calibration, for overriding a setting during revision.

purpose names a roster entry and resolves every other key. Ten entries, tabled under Roster with their values. A purpose alone is a complete invocation; a perturbation overrides one key and leaves the rest at the entry's setting.
span is target extent in words, where one is known. Left unset, extent floats and the budget reports what the admitted forms required. The Installation Budget names this quantity extent when it stands as a term in the triple; the key that carries it is span.
grave licenses or withholds the sub-lexical devices. At the low pole the document is playing --- satire, light verse, comic exposition --- and saturated patterning reads as intended rather than as frivolity. At the high pole the subject's weight makes any audible patterning a misjudgment, and the phonetic band is withheld regardless of what scale admits.
Regions: comic 0.00-0.25, light 0.25-0.50, earnest 0.50-0.80, grave 0.80-1.00.
Failure low: patterning where the subject cannot carry it. Failure high: a comic document composed as though it were solemn, its devices withdrawn by a setting that was never examined.

scale is stated as a band. Lower scales within it remain available; the band names the range in play. paragraph:document is the general case, phonetic:corpus the full literary stack.
The author names the forms. This is the instrument's primary input and what separates deliberate recurrence from the accidental leitmotif a document produces when nothing was nominated. Recurrence is a highlighting system operating on whatever happens to recur; unnominated, a subsidiary phrase that fits well gets used four times while the governing concept is stated once with great care, and the reader leaves carrying the subsidiary phrase.
strike --- concepts nominated for compression and circulation. Each entry is a candidate, not a commitment: entries pass through preparation before installation begins. State the concept, the proposed form, or both.recoin --- the author's own established forms, carried forward from prior work into this one. A recoined form is not a new strike and is not ambient stock: it is an asset the author already paid to install, and carrying it compounds rather than duplicates. Install cost is one occurrence --- a single re-anchoring touch that reminds without re-teaching. Recoined forms are exempt from disqualifier three by definition.anchor --- established material the struck forms attach to. The anchor is what the reader already holds, spent to install what the reader does not.damp --- terms whose natural recurrence is actively varied away. Optional, and the remedy for a document that keeps quoting itself back in the wrong words. Damping is a rotation obligation, not a prohibition: the term appears as often as the content requires, in varied wording, so the recurring position stays with the nominated forms.An empty strike list is legitimate and means the document circulates only ambient vocabulary. It is correct wherever no vocabulary gap is real.
One prepared pattern, and the one to reach for first. A familiar, less complex, required pattern is carried across contexts of rising complexity, restated differently at each appearance, so the whole becomes legible through the part. What the reader already holds is strengthened twice over: by the need, demonstrated wherever the pattern proves required, and by the range, demonstrated wherever it holds in harder material.
Three things move independently. The anchor holds constant in substance and varies in representation. The struck form holds constant in wording and varies in position. The surrounding concepts ascend. A reader who has watched a known pattern hold across rising difficulty has learned its range, not merely its wording.
Other patterns exist and preparation surfaces them. This one is named because it is reliable, not because it is exclusive.
Nomination runs in both directions, and its value is as much retrospective as anticipatory.
Before synthesis, state the coinage anticipated to succeed and, with equal effect, the failures anticipated --- a concept not yet developed enough to carry a form, a handle known to fit poorly, a subsidiary phrase likely to capture the recurring position. Both are corrections made before the cost is incurred.
After synthesis, the same three lists are the review instrument. Read the draft for what actually recurs, set it beside strike, and re-nominate: keep what earned the recurring position, damp what took a position it did not earn, defer what circulated before it was developed, restrike what fits poorly. Misaligned recurrence in synthesized drafts is the condition this instrument exists to correct, and the correction is a second nomination rather than a rewrite.
Three settings. What the form is, how much it omits, what recognition it trades on.
Whether a term is struck new or drawn from vocabulary already circulating for this reader.
Failure low: the credentialing effect turns exclusionary. Inability to decompress the form marks the reader outside, and the document acquires a membership boundary it did not intend.
Failure high: the vocabulary gap goes unfilled. The concept has no handle and is reconstructed at every mention, costing more in aggregate than the coinage would have cost once.
Regions: minting 0.00-0.25, mixed 0.25-0.70, inherited 0.70-1.00. The boundary at 0.25 is an install threshold.
Measured against the reader, before the document. Circulation means the reader's holdings as they stand on arrival --- vocabulary current in the subject matter, the discipline, the surrounding literature --- not vocabulary current in the draft. A term the document itself introduces is circulating in the draft by its third occurrence and is still struck, not ambient. Installation buys compressed cost inside this document; it does not convert the form into ambient stock. That conversion happens for the next document addressed to the same reader, which is why a second work in a program runs ambient higher than the first, and why reach at corpus or reader is an investment rather than an expense.
Provenance does not move the setting. Whether a term stood in the author's draft or arrived during synthesis makes no difference to what the reader holds, and the setting reads the same either way. It makes every difference in review: a term synthesis introduced and then circulated is the characteristic misalignment, and it is caught by setting what recurs beside strike, not by reading this value.
This setting decides whether a term is added to the stock. It says nothing about the difficulty of terms already in stock, which is a separate concern and outside this instrument.
How much the form omits and leaves the reader to supply.
Failure low: the reader does not hold what the form assumes and receives nothing at all, having been given a handle to a container never filled.
Failure high: expansion destroys function. The expanded form cannot perform the rapid calibration the compressed form performs in milliseconds, and precision is lost rather than gained[^1].
Regions: omitting 0.00-0.25, carrying 0.25-0.60, stating 0.60-1.00. The boundary at 0.25 is an install threshold.
Measured at delivery, in the installed steady state. The value names the compression a form carries once installed --- not at introduction, where scaffolding necessarily runs the form expanded whatever this setting says. A value of 0.20 and a fully scaffolded first occurrence are not in conflict; occurrence one is the price of occurrence four onward, and the setting describes the state the installation buys.
Measured against the reader's stock, not the author's. What the form leaves to be supplied is supplied from what the reader brought. A form the author finds obvious is expanded or compressed by the reader's holdings alone, and the two estimates diverge most where the author knows the material best.
Nomination does not fix delivery. An author may nominate a compressed form and receive an expanded one from synthesis, or the reverse. This setting governs delivered text; the gap between what was nominated and what was delivered is a review finding, not a setting error.
This setting resists later revision. Compressed forms crystallize: once a reader thinks in the compressed unit, expansion reads as archaic or pedantic, the compression having replaced the concept rather than abbreviated it. Set expanded before circulation begins. After installation it is no longer freely movable, and this is the one setting whose yield direction reverses --- where the reader is known to hold the form, expanded yields low, since expansion offered to a reader who already thinks in the compressed unit registers as pedantry.
Three options, tabled above under Denoted Values. The three may mix, and a technical concept developed inside a literary work is the common mixture: somatic for the passage that makes the concept felt, operational for the passage that makes it usable. Each mixture is itself a shift the reader pays for. Mix at structural seams rather than within a passage.
A well-struck form does more than compress. It stands as evidence about its author.
The reader who meets an apt coinage infers, correctly and without deliberation, that the author holds the material --- because striking a form that fits requires knowing which part of the content is load-bearing and which is incidental, and that discrimination cannot be faked at length. Capacity is strongly indicated by successful coinage. The credible source expresses well, and expressing well is how the source becomes credible. Compression is therefore a bonding instrument and an authority instrument in one operation: the reader is drawn into a vocabulary held in common, and the author is admitted as one who knows.
The inverse holds with equal force. A form that does not fit withdraws exactly the warrant a fitting form confers. The reader who cannot redeem a coinage, or who redeems it and finds less inside than the form promised, revises the estimate downward and applies the revision retroactively to everything already read. Nothing else here carries that penalty.
The warrant is therefore never the author's to award. It is settled at redemption, by a reader the author cannot consult --- which is why what follows is preparation rather than proof.
No test determines whether a coinage will succeed. Quality is settled at redemption, when a reader unpacks the form and finds the concept whole or finds it thin, and nothing available before that moment substitutes for the finding. What is available is preparation, and preparation is the best instrument there is --- staged work that identifies the approach before commitment, not a gate that certifies one after selection.
Preparation has a positive half and a negative half. They do different work.
Surface candidates before choosing a form, in the order that lets each step inform the next.
This is the whole of the positive instrument. Its yield is a wider candidate set and explicit criteria --- neither certifying the choice, both improving it. Staging costs a preparatory pass and returns the only advantage available on a question that admits no proof.
Four checks. Each can disqualify a form and none can qualify one. A form failing any check is known unfit; a form passing all four is only not known unfit, and that distinction is the whole of what this instrument honestly claims.
This check disqualifies duplication, not continuity. An author's
own coinage, installed in earlier work and nominated again here, is
not an occupant of the gap --- it is the gap's occupant, and the
author is its issuer. Move it to recoin, where it installs in one
occurrence and circulates at full strength. Declining a form because
the author established it previously inverts the instrument: it
penalizes the successful coinage and spends the budget on replacing
what already works.
Checks one and two catch the characteristic failure. A document that circulates a melodic theme through a concept it never developed, or through a handle poorly chosen for the concept it did develop, produces recurrence the reader registers as insistence rather than architecture. Neither check would have predicted a good form. Both would have caught these.
Four settings. How often the form returns, how far it changes on return, at what unit, how far it travels.
Regions: adjacent 0.00-0.20 where the sentence figures live, close 0.20-0.45, sectional 0.45-0.75, distant 0.75-1.00.
Failure low: mannerism. Reinforcement converts into reiteration and the reader begins attending to the pattern instead of the content.
Failure high: decay. The back-reference points at a foundation whose recall has lapsed, and everything downstream degrades quietly, the reader having no way to identify where the trouble began.
How far each return differs from the last.
Regions: verbatim 0.00-0.15, stable 0.15-0.50, rotating 0.50-0.85, dissolving 0.85-1.00. A recurrence meant to be recognized --- a running joke, a refrain, a catchphrase --- belongs in stable. Rotation is what makes a concept accumulate; it is also what stops a gag from landing, because the reader must recognize the return before it can be funny.
Failure low outside its context: flat reiteration. Recurrence that merely duplicates produces tedium, and the reader's investment falls with each identical return.
Failure high: the identity thread is lost. Rotation so complete that no lexical anchor survives, and the reader perceives variety where a through-line was intended.
Specification and compliance drafting require the low pole. A defined term that rotates is a defect and not a variation. Where a document mixes governing terms with exposition, declare a local override: verbatim for the terms, rotating for the prose around them.
Five rotation dimensions serve the high pole and corpus-scale work. Perspectival variation examines the concept from historical, practical, theoretical, and comparative viewpoints. Register modulation shifts formality or audience address, the translation itself generating insight. Contrastive framing defines the concept against a different foil each time, sharpening by triangulation. Progressive disclosure layers complexity, early presentations establishing foundations and later ones introducing qualification. Structural isomorphism detection recurs the concept through analogy across unrelated domains, where family resemblance appears without lexical repetition[^2].
How heavily the phonetic and sentential devices work the prose. scale names which units are available; muted names how hard the low end of that band is driven. The two are independent: a band reaching corpus with muted at 0.90 has document-scale recurrence and almost no audible patterning.
Regions: saturated 0.00-0.25, patterned 0.25-0.55, occasional 0.55-0.85, silent 0.85-1.00.
Failure low: the device becomes the ambient texture and loses its force.
Failure high: a document whose effect depends on sound arrives flat, its forms correct and inert.
grave caps this setting. Where grave runs above 0.80, a muted below 0.40 is refused and reported rather than composed.

A band names which units are available, not how hard they are worked. Narrowing the top of the band removes recurrence at that scale: a band of phonetic:paragraph has no document-level leitmotif and no running return, whatever the phonetic end is doing. To increase audible play without losing document-scale recurrence, lower muted and leave the band wide.
Two boundary conditions. phonetic is withheld where the gravity of the subject would make patterning read as frivolity, and sustained alliteration drifts toward the comic --- the device marks territory at openings, closings, and transitions, and loses force when it becomes the ambient texture. sentential figures each accomplish distinct work --- intensification through temporal extension, parallel force, progressive chain, grammatical counterpoint --- and are selected by the emphasis required rather than deployed as a set.
Four options, tabled above under Denoted Values. reach is scope: how far the form is intended to travel.
The trajectory runs expression, consolidation, luminosity, effervescence, creativity[^2]. What the author externalizes, the reader anchors; what is anchored acquires clarity enough to illuminate material that follows; what illuminates becomes ready to surface when the reader meets related material elsewhere; what surfaces may be recombined in the reader's own work. reach names how far along this trajectory the author intends to carry the form. Each step past document raises installation cost, because a form that must survive separation from its originating context has to arrive carrying that context.
A struck form is unavailable at compressed cost until it is installed. Installation is measured in occurrences, not tokens. Three occurrences is the floor.
anchor entry where one is nominated.Graduated anchoring is what these three occurrences enact: the form holds constant and its position varies, the anchor holds constant and its representation varies, the material ascends. That third movement makes the last occurrence informative rather than insistent.
Four conditions each add an occurrence.

A recoined form bypasses the whole accounting at one occurrence. The thresholds are coarse on purpose: a form at 0.26 does not install appreciably faster than one at 0.24, and the step is an accounting convenience rather than a claim about language. They are global, not roster-derived --- a roster entry sets where a document starts relative to them, never where they fall.
install is per form. events is the document total --- the sum of each admitted form's cost, recoined forms counted at one. A budget line reading install=6/form events=31 forms=5 describes five new forms at six occurrences each plus one recoined form at one, and it is events that is measured against extent.
Forms, installation, and extent form a triple of which any two may be chosen. The third follows. A document required to carry many forms, install them properly, and stay short is over-specified, and saying so is the correct response.
An uninstalled form costs more than no form at all. It forfeits the compression, because the reader cannot redeem it, and it forfeits the ordinary prose that would have carried the content anyway. Both sources of this instrument reach the finding independently and by different routes: the back-reference falls flat against a foundation never laid[^2], and the form the reader cannot decompress marks the reader outside[^1]. Convergence from two directions is why this governs as a law rather than sitting among the settings.
Where the request examines an existing composition rather than developing one, the settings above read as measurements rather than targets, and the work is detection and distillation.
Four passes, layered.
Present findings by function, location, or technique --- never serially. Serial cataloguing reports that recurrence occurs; organized presentation reports why it matters, which is what distils a document's intent from its surface.
Self-examination is the distinct case. Deliberate recurrence submits readily to inventory. Unplanned recurrence is more revealing and more elusive: the images, clause structures, and gravitational concepts to which the hand returns when the deliberating mind is occupied elsewhere. These may constitute a work's deepest coherence or its most instructive redundancy, and mapping them yields access to compositional instinct otherwise invisible.
One verification is available before any reader sees the draft. Name the phrase the reader will repeat afterward, then compare it against the concept nominated. Divergence is a finding, and it is the finding this instrument exists to prevent.

essay --- the primary entry, and the profile this instrument was built to serve. Literary communication across prose fiction, prose non-fiction, and poetry, where the compressed form and the patterned return are the devices themselves rather than aids to something else. The full scale band is live: consonant binding at the junctures, sentence figures for intensification, the paragraph as consolidation chamber, leitmotif across the document, rotation across a body of work. Coinage runs freely because the essay is the natural home of the struck phrase, and reach extends to the reader because the essay's aim is that a concept become available in the reader's own thinking rather than merely understood in the author's.
Three perturbations serve the sub-genres.

Everything that essay holds in reserve is spent here: coinage runs near the floor because inventing the vocabulary is the joke, muted and grave sit at the bottom so syllable play saturates the surface, interval runs close so a form returns while the reader still has the last one, and the band stays open to corpus so a running gag can run. varied is the counter-intuitive one --- it sits at 0.40, in stable, not high. A gag has to be recognized before it can land, and rotation past stable dissolves the recognition the joke depends on. Recoin freely: an established comic form is the strongest asset a satire has, and a second appearance in a later work is the payoff the first one bought.
spec --- standards, schemas, compliance artifacts, skill definitions. Governing terms return verbatim; varied at 0.05 is the entry's defining constraint and not a preference.
instrument --- frameworks and methodologies the reader will operate downstream. The vocabulary is the deliverable, so mintage runs heavy and reach extends to the reader's own work. Local override expected: setting names verbatim at varied=0.05, surrounding exposition at the entry value.
prompt --- prompt artifacts and staged model inputs. Context arrives before purpose and folds into representations formed without knowing what would matter; the end does not inform the beginning. The remedy is duplication --- the request restated after the corpus, processing with full awareness of what the first presentation contained, a technique whose empirical warrant is unusually clean[^4]. Verbatim restatement is the method, so varied runs at the floor. Richer staging runs the same principle further: synthesize context, elicit the technique spectrum, surface criteria, hypothesize requirements, focus solution opportunities, then present the well-developed question and repeat it.
treatise --- extended argument. Full scale stack in play, consolidation at paragraph, leitmotif at document, rotation across the corpus.
brief --- decision documents for readers who will not learn vocabulary for the occasion. One leitmotif carries the message and nothing else recurs.
primer --- teaching material. Both poles high: plain stock, full predication, tight interval, heavy consolidation. The reader leaves holding the vocabulary.
recruit --- material whose audience is reached only by being passed along. Novel forms are the memetic payload, compression is maximal, the somatic register does the delivery, and the form returns verbatim because portability depends on identity.
corpus --- multi-document programs, where rotation across the five dimensions is the governing technique.
record --- logs, indexes, reference matter. Coin nothing, rotate nothing, retrieve reliably.
Compression and recurrence are separate machinery with separate keys. Mint is compression --- ambient, expanded, register --- and governs what a form is. Circulate is repetition --- interval, varied, muted, scale, reach --- and governs how it returns. grave sits above both and licenses the audible devices at all.

Two couplings decide more than any single key. grave gates muted: play cannot be added to a document whose subject refuses it, and the instrument refuses the combination rather than composing it. varied opposes recognition: rotation is how a concept accumulates and is also how a joke stops being funny, so a document wanting both must split them by region --- the gag in stable, the concept in rotating --- rather than averaging.
Any setting may be overridden for a declared region --- governing terms at one configuration, surrounding exposition at another. The override is an exception to the document's configuration and is declared as such. It is not a property of the document, since what makes a region exceptional is that the rest of the document is not like it. A setting wanting override everywhere is a document setting stated wrongly.
